Johannes received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry from the University of Freiburg, Germany. His bachelor’s thesis focused on organometallic catalysis in the Institute of Organic Chemistry and his master's thesis focused on structural biology in the Institute of Biochemistry. After an Erasmus exchange at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, working on antibiotics and biofilms, he started at the Life Science Zurich Graduate School as a PhD student. In the Piel lab at the Institute of Microbiology at ETH Zurich, his main area of research is bacterial natural products, in particular RiPP lipopeptides. In his leisure time, Johannes enjoys all kinds of sports with his friends, board games, the Swiss nature and travelling.
